New York Days
Learning About Life
I was
born in New York City in 1954. My first studies were at various New York
public schools: P.S. 113, P.S. 49, J.H.S. 119 and Grover Cleveland
High School. In 1978, I received a a Bachelor of Arts degree in Communication Arts (journalism
specialization) from Long Island's Hofstra University. I continue learning
to this day.

- Remembering My Parents
- Inspiring Success
Whenever
I face adversity in my life, major or minor, I think about my parents and
I'm instantly able to place things into perspective.
- My parents met in Hamburg, Germany, at the
end of World War II. My father was a British Army driver. My mother was a
penniless German war widow with a two-year-old daughter. Set up by one of
his Army mates on a blind date, my father and mother met and fell in love
among the ruins of post-war Hamburg.
-
The next several years were marked by personal and financial struggle. In
England, my German-speaking mother and sister faced unbounded hostility from
a populace worn raw from war. My father, on the other hand, returned to
England to find a nation with a broken economy, virtually bankrupted by six
years of war. Jobs were few and well paying jobs nearly non-existent. Life
was nasty and prospects were bleak.
-
Seeking
a fresh start and personal and financial opportunity, my parents emigrated
to the U.S. in 1949 (aboard the R.M.S. Queen Mary). Life in America would
prove to be far better than in Europe, but it would be many years before my
family could achieve a lifestyle even approaching middle class status.
- Once in New York, my parents moved into a small apartment in an East
Side brownstone, where they worked as the building's live-in
superintendents. My father eventually found work as a truck driver and,
later, as a shipping floor supervisor. My mother worked as a housekeeper,
dollmaker and salad cook. Inch by painful inch, they pulled themselves
closer to the American Dream.

- Through their hard work and devotion to
reading and learning, my parents taught me that hard work, perseverance and
hope could indeed lead to success.

- I've been fortunate enough to write for many of the world's leading
magazine, book, newsletter and Web publishers, as well as a variety of
important research firms, corporations, government agencies and trade
associations. A complete listing of all the organizations I've written
for over the past two decades would require several pages.
- Below is a summary of my major current and past clients in
approximate chronological order (newest to oldest). I'm proud of my
association with all of these publications and organizations, and I am
looking forward to meeting new clients and making new friends in the
years ahead. −John
