Europa

1930-1945

Sister ship to Bremen, Europa entered service March 1930, when she took the Blue Riband from Bremen. She was at Bremerhaven when World War II began, and was considered, along with her sister ship for the planned invasion of England (which never happened, of course). Near the war's end, Europa was seized by the United States and used as a Navy transport. The following year, she was given to France's Compagnie Générale Transatlantique (French Line) as partial reparation for loss of most of its fleet during the world. She was renamed Liberté and, six months later, she broke her moorings in Le Havre during a storm and sank. She was raised and, after extensive repairs and reconstruction, entered service in August 1950. Liberté continued sailing with CGT until December 1961, when she was sold for scrap.
